Acupuncture has proven superior to conventional treatment in chronic back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee in the large acupuncture trials of the German National Health System. These trials were some of the most extensive ever done in medical history, with almost one million patients treated. In migraine prevention, acupuncture was as effective as beta-blockers, but without their – sometimes dangerous – side effects.
An acupuncture treatment is usually done as a series of 10-12 treatments once a week. The German public health insurances have made some oft he largest medical studies ever done with more than a million patients treated for chronic back pain, knee osteoarthritis, hay fever, asthma amd migraine and found, that acupuncture was superior to a conventional treatment alone.
The newspaper „DIE WELT“ (Issue from 23. Oktober 2004) concluded: „Acupuncture against chronic back- and knee pain works better than any therapy of conventional medicine“.
The „Hamburger Abendblatt“ (Issue from 21. April 2005) reported on the GERAC study: „Nine out of ten patients with hay fever had a benefit six months after the treatment, also three out of four patients with headache or lower back pain. In osteoarthritis of the knee, the success rate was 85 %, in asthma 82% and in menstrual pain 85%. Acupuncture worked as well as beta-blockers in migraine prevention, but without their – partly dangerous – side effects.
